Salinger Trailer Hits The Web

Salinger Trailer Hits The Web

Digging into the Catcher In The Rye author's secrets

If he had only written Catcher In The Rye, author J.D, Salinger would still be one of the most fascinating figures in history. But there are far more secrets and mysteries swirling about the man, not the least of which is why he mysteriously stopped publishing in the 1960s and became a virtual hermit. Now writer/director Shane Salerno has been on a quest to uncover more about him, and the result is the documentary Salinger. The trailer has arrived courtesy of Yahoo.

Salinger features interviews with 150 subjects including his friends, colleagues and members of his inner circle who have never spoken on the record before as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen.

There are also contributions from the likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, John Cusack, Danny DeVito, novelist John Guare, Martin Sheen, David Milch, Robert Towne, Tom Wolfe, E.L. Doctorow, Gore Vidal and Pulitzer Prize winners A. Scott Berg and Elizabeth Frank talk about Salinger’s influence on their lives, their work and the broader culture. The film is the first work to get beyond the Catcher In The Rye author’s meticulously built up wall: his childhood, painstaking work methods, marriages, private world and the secrets he left behind after his death in 2010.

This promises to be a fascinating look at the life of a man who preferred to keep out of the spotlight, but generated so much impact that three assassins (or would-be killers) have attributed their actions to his work.

Salerno’s documentary arrives in the US on September 6. A UK date has yet to be announced, but we’re hopeful it will make its way over here soon after that.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Confirms Terminator Role

And says shooting will kick off in January...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Confirms Terminator Role

While things have been relatively quiet on the Terminator news front since January, when Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis scored the job of writing the fifth instalment and Arnold Schwarzenegger used his trip to London as an excuse to keep pimping his involvement in the franchise, plenty has been happening behind the scenes. Word broke earlier this week that Paramount was in talks to make and distribute the new film and now here’s Arnie again chatting about his likely role.

"I'm very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January,” he said, letting slip two very relevant pieces of intel about the film that, at the time of writing have yet to be confirmed officially by brother-sister producing team Megan and David Ellison.

For Arnie to return as the Terminator would most likely require some narrative quickstepping to explain his aged appearance or – much more likely – go the performance capture route as with Terminator Salvation.

Nothing has leaked yet about the direction this new outing will take, but if it really does start the cameras rolling next year, what do you think might happen with everyone’s favourite cyborg? And before anything can happen in terms of production, the film will need a director. Can an announcement about that be far off? Time will tell if this is all actual forward momentum and not just Arnie keeping the fan flames stoked…

Emma Watson Want To Be Queen Of The Tearling

Emma Watson Want To Be Queen Of The Tearling

For producer David Heyman

Emma Watson Want To Be Queen Of The Tearling

Though things didn’t work out the last time Emma Watson was set to collaborate with a former Harry Potter team member, producer David Heyman is hoping he’ll have more luck with the actress on Queen Of The Tearling.

Watson is attached to star in the adaptation of Erika Johansen’s planned fantasy trilogy about 19-year-old princess heroine Kelsea Glynn. Set three centuries after a small portion of the human race has populated a landmass that mysteriously emerged in the wake of an environmental catastrophe, the story follows Glynn as she tries to reclaim her deceased mother’s throne and redeem her kingdom, the Tearling, from forces of corruption and dark magic of The Red Queen, the sorceress-tyrant of the neighbouring country, Mortmesn.

Described as a female-orientated Game Of Thrones that also features a strong coming-of-age element, we’re just hoping this means Watson won’t lose her head two thirds of the way into the first film.

Johansen, who was apparently inspired jointly by a 2007 dream and a speech Barack Obama gave a few days later, scored a hefty publishing deal earlier this year, and Heyman had Warner Bros. nab the film rights. The first book is set to land next year. Given the success of the Potter films, the studio must be crossing its fingers for big things from this one.

Now, of course, comes the task of finding a writer to adapt the book and a director to launch the thing. Watson, meanwhile, is back on our screens in apocalyptic comedy This Is The End (due June 28) and Hollywood theft pic The Bling Ring, which arrives here on July 5. Following those two, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah will sail in on March 28 next year.

Melissa McCarthy Says B.O.O.

Melissa McCarthy Says B.O.O.

She's on for the ghostly DreamWorks 'toon

Melissa McCarthy Says B.O.O.

She’s been appearing in lots of films this year, from Identity Thief to This Is 40 and even The Hangover Part III. But for a future project, Melissa McCarthy will only be heard, as she’s signed to voice DreamWorks Animation’s B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations.

Given the lead time on animated movies, she’s probably been at work on the thing for a while, but we now know she’s playing Watts, the partner to fellow spook Jackson Moss (Seth Rogen). The bureau of the title handles ghost activity in the world and keeps humanity safe from evil hauntings. Their job becomes trickier when the Most Wanted Haunter plots to destroy the agency.

Yes, it sounds a little close to the concept for R.I.P.D. (itself feeling awfully similar to Men In Black), but the combo of Rogen and McCarthy as wacky ghost cops is appealing. Tony Leondis is directing, and came up with the basic idea, which was then scripted by Puss In Boots writer Tom Wheeler.

McCarthy will be back on our screens alongside Sandra Bullock in cop comedy The Heat(out June 28) and has been busy making her co-directorial debut (with other half Ben Falcone) on Tammi. She’s also lined up work on indie pic St. Vincent de Van Nuys. You can hear her dropping by the Empire Pod-booth to talk Identity Thief alongside Jason Bateman below.
