Hollywood and D.C. Celebrate Journalism at Variety, Washington Post and SAG-AFTRA Event

The mix of glitz and government on the White House Correspondents Association dinner weekend can overshadow the purpose of the event: journalism. On the eve of the annual dinner, Variety teamed with The Washington Post, SAG-AFTRA and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation for a Celebration of Journalism, held at the Post’s new headquarters in downtown D.C. Politics, Legends, Lassie And Lollobrigida Share The Spotlight As TCM Classic Film Festival Gets Rolling In Hollywood

It is TCM Classic Film Festival time again in Hollywood as the film-centric cable channel throws its 7th Annual fest devoted to all things good about old movies.  Actually I hate to use the term “old movies”, because if you’ve never seen it , it’s brand new in a way , and “classic” never goes out of style.  Last night at the TCL Chinese Theatre the fest got political with its main opening attraction,  a 40th anniversary screening of All The President’s Men.  And although…

I am – Hercules!!
If you’ve not seen the Natasha Richardson movie or read the Margaret Atwood book, “The Handmaid’s Tale” depicts a dystopian future in which a big chunk of the United States establishes an ISIS-y fundamentalist state and forces its dwindling number of fertile women into to sexual slavery.
(Well, dystopian for some. Did you know Ted Cruz believes if a girl is raped, she should be forced to bear her rapist’s child? He really does! I am not making this up! I dare you to vote for this asshole! )
Anyway, “Mad Men” star Elizabeth Moss, who to me will always be Jed Barlet’s youngest, will play the main sex slave in the Amazon series, set to launch in 2017.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. So I’ve only begun dipping my toe into tabeltop fun stuffs. I’ve got a regular Risk Legacy game going and have been lucky enough to win a few rounds of Munchkin with my nerdier friends, but one I haven’t tried yet is Monsterpocalypse. I’ve heard good things, but only know the basic set up.
It’s essentially Rampage and Pacific Rim, but on your tabletop. Giant monsters attack a city and there’s a giant robot or two in there for good measure. According to THR game producer Privateer Press has put a film rights package together with Fede Alvarez attached to direct an adaptation he co-wrote with his partner in crime Rodo Sayagues and the studios (namely Warner Bros, Sony and Dreamworks) are falling over themselves to get the rights.
New Line has a Rampage movie in the works with Dwayne Johnson attached. I wonder if WB is in this bidding war in order to stop this movie from cockblocking their proposed giant monster action flick.
All I know is Fede and Rodo’s latest flick, Don’t Breathe, is a great home invasion thriller and no matter what you think of the Evil Dead reboot it’s impossible to deny that Alvarez has a hell of an eye. I think he could make an awesome flick with a giant pool of resources around him.
Thoughts?

Labor Department: Art Directors Guild Exec Director Is “Officer” & Must Stand For Election

It a move that could send shock waves throughout the leadership of every major Hollywood union and guild, the U.S. Department of Labor has ordered Scott Roth, executive director of the Art Directors Guild, to stand for election for the first time since he was brought in to lead the union in 1997.
For nearly two decades, he has been re-upped every three years by the guild’s board of directors — and served at its pleasure. But now the DOL has ruled that Roth is an “officer”…
